The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers concluded their 2015/16 pre-season with a solid 2-1 win against APIA Leichhardt at Leichhardt Oval.

Goals from Italian marquee Federico Piovaccari and Dutch winger Romeo Castelen set-up the win in the first half before a host of changes in an experimental second stanza.
The match opened with APIA on the front foot with former Wanderer Nick Olsen leading the charge. APIA’s attacks though were well defended by the Red & Black with Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Scott Jamieson both impressive.

After soaking up the early pressure, the Wanderers began to dominate the match with Jaushua Sotirio particularly impressive, involving himself in a number of chances created.

It was the other winger though who set-up the first goal as Castelen’s superb cross was headed home at the far post by Piovaccari.

A few minutes later and the lead was doubled as Spanish midfielder Dimas was taken down in the box with Castelen converting the spot-kick.
The second half was a less fluid affair with Tony Popovic emptying his bench with mainly trialists seeing minutes.

Saying that, it was a relatively comfortable final 45 minutes for the Wanderers aside from a consolation goal to APIA’s Nathan Milgate to finish the match 2-1.

The Red & Black’s next assignment is the Westfield FFA Cup Quarter Final against Perth Glory which will be played at Dorrien Gardens on Tuesday 29 September.
