It’s not about me says Mebrahtu

Despite scoring the winner in the Wanderers’ first ever Westfield FFA Cup victory, Western Sydney forward Golgol Mebrahtu insisted it was the team that deserved full credit for the 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar.

Only three weeks into pre-season, it was a mixed starting line-up form the Red & Black that withstood pressure from the visitors in the first half before running away with the game in the second, thanks in part to Mebrahtu’s dangerous runs and of course, his finish.

While obviously a stand-out, the Sudanese-born striker was in no mood to keep the plaudits to himself.

“I was just really happy for the team for putting in a good solid performance so early in the pre-season as well,” explained Mebrahtu.

“We’ve got a lot to build on and we’re moving along now. We will keep our heads down and work hard and hopefully achieve more success.”

Even when pressed on the delightful strike, the 24-year-old deflected praise in line with his typically humble nature.

“The team did really well to build up the play and I saw Romeo lay it off for me and I took the opportunity and went around the defender and scored.”

A recurring theme in Mebrahtu’s responses was the emphasis on the team and importance of them working together to achieve great results.

“Football is a team sport. I don’t pay attention to any individual stuff and my job as a player in the team is to help the team succeed.

“Everyone has goals but the most important ones are the team goals and it’s to win the title at the end of the season.”

You can next see the team in action when they return to Mebrahtu’s former stomping ground to take on Palm Beach Sharks in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16.
