Wellington Phoenix and Western Sydney Wanderers will be looking to improve upon their slow starts to the A-League Women season when they face off at Sky Stadium on Sunday.
Western Sydney Wanderers slumped 2-0 against Sydney at Allianz Stadium in their last A-League Women match, their fifth straight loss, leaving them in 10th place on zero points through five matches.
Wellington also lost their last A-League Women match 1-0 at home against Adelaide United, their fifth straight defeat.
Wellington won the last A-League Women meeting between the clubs, coming out on top 3-2 at Marconi Stadium last season. Kate Taylor scored first for Wellington Phoenix Women in the 37th minute. Ava Pritchard and Grace Jale also were on the scoresheet. Ashlie Crofts scored the lone goal for Western Sydney Wanderers FC Women in the second minute. They also were the beneficiaries of an own goal by Wellington Phoenix Women’s Talitha Kramer.
Visitors Wanderers have been thankful to Melissa Caceres and Amy Harrison, who have each netted once.
In the final third, Marisa van der Meer has been a key player for Wellington this season. The defender is the club’s leading scorer with one goal.
Hosts Wellington are still looking for their first point in three A-League Women contests at home this season, scoring two goals and conceding nine. Ending their league away-day frustrations will be the aim for Wanderers, who have not yet found their form this season on the road with three losses in three matches. Western sydney wanderers fc women are looking to reverse a seven-match away winless streak (W0 D1 L6). The last time they earned a win away was January 2022 against Brisbane Roar.
