NPL 1 Preview: Sydney United v Wanderers

A short trip to Edensor Park and Sydney United awaits the Wanderers NPL side this weekend, as they look to turn around a difficult run of form.

It has been a tough few weeks for the Wanderers, who despite remaining competitive in all of their matches, have little to show for their efforts in terms of points.

Their task has been made more difficult by injuries, suspension, and a loss of players through international duty, which means players are having to play in unfamiliar positions and a rise in younger players taking to the field.

This will be the case this week, with Marcus Younis, Alex Badolato and Frans Deli all with the Australia U20s side, and Alessandro Lopane having left the club, the likes of George Antonis and Zac Sapsford will fill the void left by these players.

In their last round clash against St George City FA, they almost staged a late fightback to overturn a two goal deficit, with Jesse Cameron scoring a wonder goal from distance, but the side was unable to beat the clock and the away side held on for a 2-1 victory.

Their opponents are coming into this match off a much needed and impressive 2-1 victory away from home against ladder leaders APIA Leichhardt FC.

Goals from Patrick Antelmi and Chris Payne helped United break a three game losing streak and also inflicted APIA’s first loss of the season at home.

Whilst Sydney United’s defence has been resolute, their attack has lacked spark, with the side only scoring 23 goals so far this season.

With the Wanderers having kept Blacktown City scoreless two weeks ago, there is a chance that with a similarly strong defensive display they can repeat the trick on the road again, leading the side to a crucial three points.
