The Philippine Women’s National Team made history after clinching a memorable first win over hosts New Zealand, 1-0, at the Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand.
Sarina Bolden etched herself in FIFA Women’s World Cup history as the first Filipino player to score in a World Cup final match after her 24th minute header, off a cross from Sara Eggesvik proved to be the difference in the match.
But it was New Zealand, who were pressing on for the opener, when Hannah Wilkinson had an effort in the 10th minute.
Bolden’s winner came at an opportune time. Angela Beard’s free kick to the box, forcing the New Zealand defense to scramble, which led to Eggesvik’s cross that led to the opening goal.
The hosts continued to find their chances on goal from Jacqui Hand and Katie Bowen, but were unable to convert. Katrina Guillou almost doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, but could only muster it wide.
Hand would went on to head the ball in the back of the net in the 64th minute, but after a lengthy video review, it was ruled out for offside.
Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel went on to be named as the Player of the Match after producing a number of saves to deny New Zealand.
“It feels amazing, getting our first win in our debut in the World Cup, we couldn’t ask for more,” said McDaniel.
“Everyone worked their butts off. We put our heads down, we fought, and we worked, and we got what we wanted out of it, so it feels amazing.
The Filipinas will have a chance to clinch a spot in the knockout stages when the face Norway, who drew Switzerland, 0-0, in the other game, on Sunday 30 July 2023 at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
