Community coaches from the Western Sydney Wanderers attended a special anti-racism workshop at the University of Western Sydney last week to see how they can use their influence to eradicate racism from the community.
At the workshop the coaches heard from UWS researchers working on the Challenging Racism project; Australia’s largest study into ethnic relations and cultural diversity.
The coaches were shown the best strategies to use when they witness racism and will now pass these skills onto the children they meet in Western Sydney school football clinics.
Children and adults across Western Sydney can take a stand against racism by not getting involved in bad behaviour, respecting differences in people and cultures and not calling other people names.
Research from UWS has found it’s crucial for people to send the message “racism is not okay”.
In some cases people may be concerned their actions could make them unsafe or the target of abuse yet there is always a way to respond.
By conducting vital research into racism and holding workshops the University of Western Sydney and the Western Sydney Wanderers are together helping create a tolerant society we can all enjoy.
This workshop was followed by the University of Western Sydney hosting key anti-racism researchers and members of the Western Sydney Business Community at the Sydney Derby to discuss this important issue as well as collaboration opportunities.
