Wanderers launch Sensory Friendly Space

The Western Sydney Wanderers are proud to be working with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) to launch a new Sensory Friendly Space at CommBank Stadium.

The Sensory Friendly Space will be available on Level 3 of CommBank Stadium and is a space for members and fans who have sensory sensitivities, processing differences or other hidden disabilities.

The space was trialed at the Wanderers recent fixture against Western United and is part of the Red & Black’s ongoing work in the inclusivity space which includes grassroots football tournaments and football in schools programs.

Autism Spectrum Australia Tom Tutton said inclusivity was vital.

“It’s one of a range of initiatives that the Wanderers have with Autism Spectrum Australia,” said Tutton.

“Autistic people experience the world very differently. Sometimes that brings great joy, so you’ll see people really overwhelmingly happy with certain sensations and some of the toys and fidgets that we have are about bringing joy to people.

“But equally, the world can be quite overwhelming. So what we might enjoy in terms of flashes of light or cheers, can actually be perceived as almost painful to people.

“This quiet room at the stadium is another one of those kind of initiatives. It’s not a big change from the main experience, but, what we know is that its more controlled. It’s quieter, there’s some support from staff.

“Inclusion is really important. So it’s important that everybody in our community is made to feel welcome.”
