NPL Wrap: Wanderers defeated by St George

It was a night to forget for the young Wanderers as they were on the wrong end of a 5-0 defeat against St George City.

The home side shot straight out of the blocks to score three quick goals, and it was ultimately a margin our NPL NSW side couldn’t overcome.

Already without key A-League players, the Wanderers were also deprived of stand-in captain Ryley Hollingdale and starting right back Jesse Cameron.

St George pressed with intent early and scored the opener after five minutes through Jesse Photi.

Their tails were up and they added a second eight minutes later when Paolo Mitry scored a quality volley from the edge of the box.

The Wanderers were unable to get into the game to begin with, and St George punished them with ruthless efficiency as they scored a third through Kosta Petratos after 23 minutes.

The Red and Black were finally able to regain some control of the match, and created some chances through Mason Fernandez and Meliwethu Nkomo, but neither effort troubled goalkeeper Jack Kenny.

In the second half, Ricky Fransen was alert and put in a perfectly-timed slide tackle to deny Fumoto Kamada, whilst Nkomo had another effort on goal that was only narrowly off target.

St George then added a fourth goal through Nathan Roberts, before Mason Fernandez went close with a free-kick that went under the wall, but Kenny read the sneaky play and was able to save.

Petratos scored his second goal of the night as the clock wound down, as the Wanderers were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat.

It was a match that was well below the standards set by the coaching staff, and the side will be hard at work in training to ensure they bounce back in a local derby against Blacktown on Sunday.
