NPL 1 Wrap: Marconi defeat Wanderers in close affair

A defiant Western Sydney Wanderers have gone down 1–0 to the Marconi Stallions at Wanderers Football Park on Saturday in what was a tight affair between the two sides.

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side were defeated 1-0 at Wanderers Park after a courageous performance at home, with a Tass Mourdoukoutas goal in the 37th minute proving the difference as Marconi clawed home with all three points.

Following favourable results to both Mount Druitt and NWS Spirit, both Marconi and the Wanderers needed to win to aid their respective battles on either end of the table.

Marconi started the game dominating possession as they looked to create an opening through wingers Franco Maja and Dom Costanzo. Maja struck from distance in the 7th minute but found his shot straying wide.

Edmun Haddad had two free kicks within minutes of each other but failed to trouble James Hilton, although he was within inches of finding Ricky Fransen on the second attempt.

Sinnott would deny Maja once again as he looked for the back post, but the 37th-minute corner would prove decisive. Costanzo would deliver a corner into the danger area, and following the failure to clear the ball, Mourdoukoutas would tap it in at the back post for the opener.

Costanzo would find himself on the end of another dangerous chance as his volley on the edge of the box forced Sinnott into a flying save.

Alaat Abdul-Rahman would be presented with the game’s clearest chance. Darting his way to goal, he would cut inside the recovering defender but would unfortunately strike his shot wide of the goal.

That would signify the Wanderers’ final chance in the game as they would go down 1-0 in what was a resilient performance by the young side.

A mouth-watering Sydney Derby awaits the Wanderers as they look to evade a relegation battle heading into the pointy end of the season.
