NPL 1 Women’s Preview: Wanderers v Northern Tigers

The Wanderers NPL 1 Women’s side return to Wanderers Football Park determined to turn their hard work into results as they take on the Northern Tigers, ready to chase their first win in eleven matches.

Following a courageous draw with the Mount Druitt Town Rangers, the Wanderers will be looking to capitalise on a stellar performance as they head into the penultimate round of the competition as they take on the Northern Tigers at Wanderers Football Park.

The Wanderers are coming off a 2-2 draw against Mount Druitt Town Rangers, in a game where an Isabella Sultan added time free kick sealed a valuable point for the struggling side. The win secures their safety for the season, distancing themselves from Newcastle Jets leading into the last two games of the season.

The Northern Tigers, winless in five, also come off a 2-2 draw against Mount Druitt following their mid-week clash. Goals to Burton and Longhurst sealed the comeback for the Tigers, as they stared down the barrel of a five game winless run.

The last time the two sides faced off, the Tigers ran away 2-1 victors at North Turramarra, with Haley Johnson scoring a brace against a stubborn Wanderers defence that made it difficult for the league’s best attacking side at the time. Carolina Wyrzynski scored a consolation goal late in the game to bring the deficit back to one.

The Key Decider: A Balanced Performance

The Wanderers have improved their attacking stats in the last month of the competition, scoring 10 goals in their last 5 games, on two occasions scoring four. It is clear to see they are capable of finding the back of the net, but the lack of a balanced performance has let them down this season.

The side’s ability to score multiple goals in a game, has been marred by the fact that they have conceded as many as they have scored. The defensive woes have hampered this side’s chances this year, and at times cost them games in situations where the Red and Black have been on top.

Eleven games without a win, and a desperation to end the season on a high should be enough for the side to take advantage of a Northern Tigers side that for so long looked finals bound, until their recent run of form saw the side tumble out of finals contention.

The Wanderers will look to rely on their youthful defence to keep the likes of Haley Johnson and Isabel Gomez out of the back of the net in a bid to right the wrongs of the last three months.

Expect an enthralling game between two sides that aim to finish the season on a positive note, following a disappointing run of form leading into the penultimate round of the NPL Season.
