Red & Black connect with the defence community at the national tournament

Over the weekend, the Western Sydney Wanderers joined the Australian Defence Force Football Federation (ADFFF) at their annual National Tournament, a celebration of football, service and community spirit.

Running from 10–17 October, the week-long competition brought together players from across Australia and New Zealand’s Army, Navy and Air Force.

On the surface, it’s a battle for national honours and selection into the ADF representative sides, but at its core, it’s much more than that.

“The ADF Football Federation’s National Tournament is our showcase event, bringing together the best footballers from Navy, Army and Air Force to compete for national honours and ADF team selection,” said a spokesperson for the ADFFF.

“It’s more than just football though. The tournament helps build leadership, teamwork and resilience – qualities that matter just as much on the field as they do in service.

“It’s a week where people from all corners of Defence come together, push themselves, and form lasting connections through the game we all love.”

For the Wanderers, attending the tournament was about connection, strengthening ties with the Defence community and recognising the shared values that bind football and service together. Pride in the jersey. Commitment to the team. A deep connection to community.

“The ADF and the Wanderers share a lot in common. Pride in the jersey, a commitment to the team, and a connection to the community,” the spokesperson continued.

“Our relationship gives us the chance to engage with fans, veterans and the wider football family across Western Sydney. For our players, balancing football and service is part of everyday life. Defence recognises that sport plays a huge role in keeping our people fit, focused and connected. It’s an outlet that builds leadership, resilience and wellbeing and helps our personnel be at their best both in uniform and on the pitch.”

As the A-Leagues season kicks off, the ADF Football Federation shared their support for the Red & Black.

“The ADF Football Federation is excited for the upcoming A-League season and wishes the Western Sydney Wanderers the best of luck for the season ahead. Inspiring players and fans across the country, the club’s passion, determination and community connection mirror the values we live in Defence and we look forward to seeing what they can accomplish this season.”

From Valentine Sports Park to CommBank Stadium, football continues to bring people together.

A shared language of teamwork, pride, and purpose that runs deep in both the military and the game.
