Despite a 3-1 defeat to Perth Glory in last weekend’s weather-affected season opener, the Red & Black showed plenty of positives across the park, from the energy of new recruits to the attacking intent that kept the home crowd on their feet until the final whistle.

Alyssa Ng Saad led the way in the final third with a confident display, forcing early saves and coming close again deep into stoppage time, while Ella Buchanan opened her account for the season with a poacher’s finish that reignited the Wanderers’ momentum midway through the second half.

Club Debutant Alana Cerne also impressed in defence, almost capping her first appearance with a stunning long-range effort.

With the foundations set, Geoff Abraham’s side will be eager to turn their performance into points this weekend.

The Wanderers’ intensity, composure and attacking combinations suggest that the breakthrough moment is close, and there would be no better place to find it than back on home soil in front of the Red & Black faithful.

Sunday’s visitors Melbourne Victory will arrive in Western Sydney equally determined after a narrow 3-2 loss to Brisbane Roar in a match disrupted by lightning delays.

It will be a milestone occasion for their long-serving head coach Jeff Hopkins, who celebrates his 200th A-Leagues appearance at the helm.

The focus for the Wanderers will be on continuing their progression, sharpening in front of goal, building connections across the pitch and maintaining the same attacking spirit that marked their Round 1 performance.

With a youthful and exciting squad eager to make their mark, the Wanderers will be out to deliver a performance that reflects their potential and gives their home fans plenty to cheer about on Sunday afternoon.
