Anthony Pantazopolous: “This is War” Ahead of the Sydney Derby

The Sydney Derby is unlike any other game on the A-League calendar. When the Western Sydney Wanderers face Sydney FC, it’s more than 90 minutes of football.

It’s a battle for the heart of the city, pride, and bragging rights that last long after the final whistle.

East versus west, rival against rival, the stakes couldn’t be higher, and the intensity in every tackle, pass, and goal is felt by players and fans alike.

No one embodies that intensity better than member and fan-favourite Anthony Pantazopolous.

Known for his relentlessness, energy, and uncompromising attitude on the pitch, he thrives in matches where the pressure is at its peak. Every time he steps onto the field, he carries the pride of Western Sydney and the responsibility to fight for every inch of ground.

“This is war,” Pantazopolous said ahead of Saturday’s clash.

“This isn’t just another game. It’s bragging rights for the whole city and showing who runs this state.”

It’s a mindset that defines Pantazopolous’ style, a player who gives everything for the badge and for the fans who cheer him on.

“We’re very fortunate to have the best 12th man, the highest to the lowest. When you go in for a tackle, when you score a goal and look back and see them, it’s something that gives you goosebumps,” he said.

That connection with the Wanderers’ members and supporters is what fuels his fire, and it’s clear that for him, the roar of the crowd isn’t just noise. It’s energy he feeds off.

Pantazopolous’ passion for the Derby runs deep, extending beyond the rivalry itself. He recalls a defining moment in his memory even before he joined the Wanderers.

“I remember watching Milos Ninkovic in his first Derby against them, providing the assist for Kusini Yengi, and seeing the scenes when that happened.

“That was a truly special moment that forever stayed in my memory, and I’m going to create even more.”

That same drive and determination are what he brings to every Derby he plays in, a relentless competitor who never stops fighting until the final whistle.

For Pantazopolous, the Derby is more than just a match. It’s a reflection of the community he represents.

“It means everything to me. Western Sydney is a community where everyone fights for each other. Every time I put on the badge, I’m carrying the pride of the people on it, and that’s something I don’t take lightly. I always want to represent my community in the best way possible, the way they all deserve.”

This Saturday, when the Wanderers run out at CommBank Stadium, the atmosphere will be electric, the tension palpable, and the stakes sky-high.

With Pantazopolous leading the charge in the midfield, members and fans can expect a player who is relentless, fearless, and ready to fight for every ball, every tackle, and every goal.

The message is clear, this is war, and nobody embodies that spirit quite like Anthony Pantazopolous.
