Sydney Derby the ‘biggest event on the domestic sporting calendar’

The Sydney Derby is the number one event on the Australian sporting calendar, according to Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Alen Stajcic.

Western Sydney will host fierce cross-town rivals Sydney FC in the first Sydney Derby of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2025-26 season on Saturday night.

The Sydney Derby has become a marquee event on the sporting calendar, and Stajcic is relishing the latest instalment of the showpiece fixture.

“For me, it’s probably the biggest event on the domestic sporting calendar, regardless of code. I don’t know any bigger game, the atmosphere is unrivalled in any sport,” Stajcic told reporters.

“I’ve been to a lot of AFL and NRL matches. They don’t match the Sydney Derby for noise and excitement and passion and fever.

“We’ve really got one of the marquee events in our competition.

“It’s important that we embrace all that as fans and as members of both clubs and fans of our sport and players in the game and administrators the game, we embrace that we really have one of the pinnacle occasions of the sporting calendar.”

The Wanderers welcome high-flying Sydney FC to CommBank Stadium in Round 6 on the back of their first win of the season.

Meanwhile, the Sky Blues are top of the standings amid a run of four consecutive victories.

The group’s in a good place at the moment, mentally and physically,” said Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay.

“We’ve come off some really positive results leading into this game.

“Wanderers had a good result against Central Coast over the weekend. So look, there’s no easy game in the competition, but at the moment I think where we’re at and where the group is at, I think we’re in a good place and hopefully we can bring that on the weekend as well.”
