Congratulations to two standout performers from the Western Sydney Wanderers Girls’ Academy who were recognised for their outstanding performances at the 2026 CommBank Emerging Matildas Championships in Melbourne.
Tessa Young was awarded the U16 CommBank Player of the Tournament, while Sophie Aungle capped off a remarkable week by claiming the U16 Golden Boot after finishing the competition with seven goals.
The pair were instrumental across the week-long tournament at the Home of the Matildas, where Australia’s best Under-15 and Under-16 female footballers came together in an elite high-performance environment designed to showcase the next generation of Matildas talent.
Young’s consistent influence across the tournament saw her stand out among a highly competitive field, earning recognition as the tournament’s best player in her age group. Her award highlights both her individual quality and her impact on games at key moments throughout the Championships.
Aungle, meanwhile, proved to be a constant attacking threat, finishing as the competition’s leading goal scorer in the U16 age group with seven goals. Her finishing form throughout the week underlined her development as a forward and her ability to perform on the national stage.
The accolades for both players reflect the strength and continued growth of the Wanderers Girls’ Academy program, and its role in developing players capable of excelling at the highest levels of youth football in Australia.
A memorable week in Melbourne, and a sign of even greater things to come.
