Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder Dylan Scicluna says Tuesday night’s Sydney Super Cup clash against Chelsea FC is an opportunity the entire squad is relishing, with the chance to test themselves against some of the world’s best players.

The Wanderers will take on the Premier League giants at Accor Stadium in the opening match of the Sydney Super Cup, marking the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.
For Scicluna, however, the occasion is one to embrace rather than fear.
“Ultimately, it’s a game of football against another opponent,” Scicluna said.
“They’re a world-class team with world-class players, but anything can happen. We’ve got to stick to our game plan, trust our structure, take the game to them and see what happens.”
The 22-year-old believes opportunities like Tuesday night’s are invaluable for a squad looking to continue its development ahead of the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League Men season.
Facing elite opposition provides the chance to measure themselves against the highest standard, while giving members and fans another glimpse of the football the Wanderers are working towards under Head Coach Ufuk Talay.
“You always want to test yourself against the best players,” Scicluna said.
“Tomorrow will be a great challenge for everyone in our squad, whether you’re a younger player coming through or one of the more experienced boys.
“As a player, you always want to be the best version of yourself, so it’ll be exciting to test myself against some of the best players in the world and hopefully get the better of them.”
Chelsea arrive in Sydney boasting a squad packed with international talent and beginning a new era under Head Coach Xabi Alonso, with Scicluna expecting an energetic and technically gifted opponent.
“You expect them to have a lot of quality,” he said.
“They’ve got some of the best players in the world and, under a new coach in Xabi Alonso, you expect them to be full of energy and eager to impress.
“They’ll want to dominate possession, be creative and dictate the game with their combination play. Hopefully we can disrupt that, have plenty of the ball ourselves and put on a great game for the fans.”
With thousands of supporters expected to create a memorable atmosphere at Accor Stadium, the Sydney Super Cup presents another important step in the Wanderers’ preparations for the season ahead.
For Scicluna, though, the focus is simple.
The opposition may be among the biggest names in world football, but once the whistle blows, it’s another opportunity for the Wanderers to test themselves, back their football and continue building towards the season ahead.
