The Western Sydney Wanderers’ fearless performance against Chelsea has earned praise from one of world football’s most respected coaches, with Blues Head Coach Xabi Alonso applauding the Red & Black’s intensity, commitment and attacking intent following Tuesday night’s Sydney Super Cup clash.
The Red & Black refused to take a backwards step, leading Chelsea on three separate occasions and scoring four goals in a bold, front-foot performance that embodied the fearless identity beginning to take shape under Head Coach Ufuk Talay.
While Chelsea eventually claimed a 6-4 victory, Alonso was full of admiration for the challenge presented by the Wanderers.
“For us it has been a very useful friendly, credit to (Wanderers),” Alonso said.
“They had a real go, it was very intense, we will get good things from this friendly.”
Rather than sitting back against one of Europe’s biggest clubs, the Wanderers took the game on from the opening whistle, pressing high, playing with confidence in possession and refusing to be overawed by the occasion.
It was an approach that caught Chelsea’s attention.
“To be honest we didn’t know really what they were going to do,” Alonso admitted.
“If they were going to sit deep or come aggressive. In the second half we had to change a little bit, it was very interesting.”
The comments were a reflection of the football the Wanderers are striving to play under Talay positive, proactive and brave against any opponent.
Alonso was particularly impressed by the collective effort shown across the park.
“The whole team impressed me,” he said.
“They had a very aggressive intent in good terms. In terms of high pressing. In terms of commitment. How they want to play.”
For a side still in the early stages of its pre-season preparations, it was another encouraging sign of the standards being set ahead of the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Despite Chelsea’s late comeback, the Wanderers never stopped asking questions of one of the world’s biggest clubs, with four different goalscorers, an energetic high press and a willingness to attack ensuring the Red & Black remained in the contest until the closing stages.
Alonso acknowledged just how difficult the Wanderers made the night.
“They had a real go so it was tough at the end,” he said.
“We beat them but it was a very, very close game so credit to them as well.”
For the Wanderers, the performance was another step forward.
The result may not have fallen their way, but the respect earned from one of the game’s biggest names spoke volumes.
The Red & Black didn’t just share the pitch with Chelsea. They showed they belonged there.
