Western Sydney Wanderers youngster Ricky Fransen has added international silverware to his growing resume, helping New Zealand claim the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship following an unbeaten campaign in Samoa.
The Junior All Whites secured their tenth OFC U-19 title with a 2-0 victory over Tahiti in the Final at Samoa Football HQ in Apia, capping an impressive tournament for Fransen and his New Zealand teammates.
The result also secured New Zealand qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027, giving Fransen the opportunity to continue his development on one of international youth football’s biggest stages.
After defeating Tahiti 8-0 earlier in the group stage, New Zealand were forced to work much harder in the tournament decider as their opponents produced a disciplined defensive performance.
The breakthrough eventually arrived deep into first-half stoppage time, with a dangerous delivery from Dejaun Naidoo turned into the Tahiti net under pressure from Victor Barbosa to give New Zealand a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Tahiti continued to challenge after the restart, while New Zealand pushed for the goal that would put the contest beyond doubt.
That moment arrived in the 79th minute when substitute Harley Hill found the back of the net to double the advantage and move onto five goals for the tournament.
New Zealand saw out the remaining stages to secure a 2-0 victory and retain the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship crown for a fifth consecutive edition.
For Fransen, the achievement marks another important milestone in his development, with the Wanderers youngster now an OFC champion and part of a New Zealand side that has booked its place at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
