Wanderers push for a response but fall 1-0 to Victory at home

The Western Sydney Wanderers showed plenty of fight in their opening match of the Ninja A-League season, but were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Melbourne Victory at Wanderers Football Park on Saturday afternoon.

Despite enjoying the greater share of possession and pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Geoff Abrahams’ side were ultimately undone by a first-half free kick from Jančevski. The Red & Black continued to press after the break, forcing Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon into a pair of important saves, but were unable to find the breakthrough.

First half

Head coach Geoff Abrahams named a refreshed Red & Black starting XI for the season opener, with Sarah Langman between the posts behind a defensive line of Laura Pickett, Tiana Jaber, Silje Bjørneboe and Milly Bennett. Captain Rhianna Pollicina was joined by Sofia Sakalis and Sofia Palywoda in midfield, while Talia Younis, Elexa Bahr and Brooke Miller led the attack in a 4-3-3 formation.

The Wanderers made a positive start to the contest, earning an early corner before Talia Younis looked to break through Victory’s defensive line, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Geoff Abrahams was forced into an early change in the 16th minute, with captain Rhianna Pollicina unable to continue due to injury and Samantha Iredale introduced in her place.

Victory threatened for the first time on the half-hour mark when Anna Sutter sent an effort high and wide following a set piece, before the visitors found the breakthrough just two minutes later. Alana Jančevski stepped up to take a free kick from outside the penalty area, curling a left-footed strike into the bottom corner to give Victory a 1-0 advantage.

The visitors looked to extend their lead shortly after, with Zoe McMeeken firing over the crossbar from distance before receiving a yellow card in the 39th minute.

Despite their early attacking intent and a competitive opening 45 minutes, the Red & Black headed into the half-time break trailing by a solitary goal, with plenty still to play for in the second half.

Second half

The Red & Black returned from the break determined to find a way back into the contest, but were called into action defensively early in the second half. Sofia Palywoda produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Alicia Woods and keep the Wanderers within touching distance.

Looking to inject fresh energy into the attack, Geoff Abrahams made a double substitution on the hour mark, introducing Allyssa Ng-Saad and Nikkita Fazzari in place of Brooke Miller and Sofia Sakalis.

The changes brought renewed attacking intent from the Wanderers, who began pushing further forward in search of an equaliser.

Talia Younis came close to finding the breakthrough in the 62nd minute, forcing Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon into a save with the Wanderers’ first shot on target of the afternoon.

The Red & Black continued to build momentum, with Elexa Bahr combining well with Ng-Saad on the edge of the area, only for the substitute’s effort to be blocked by Angela Beard as the hosts searched for a deserved equaliser.

The Wanderers continued to grow into the contest, with Ng-Saad once again combining with Bahr in the 70th minute to test Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon, who was forced into another important save to preserve the visitors’ narrow advantage.

Victory responded with an opportunity of their own shortly after, as substitute Chelsea Blissett rose to meet an Alicia Woods cross, but Sarah Langman was well positioned to gather the header and keep the Red & Black firmly in the contest.

Victory looked to put the result beyond doubt in the closing stages, but the Wanderers continued to battle as they searched for a late equaliser.

Kayla Morrison saw an effort blocked before Jančevski fired over the crossbar from a corner routine, with the Red & Black remaining within striking distance.

Silje Bjørneboe received a yellow card in the 83rd minute before Geoff Abrahams made another change, introducing Estelle Fragale in place of Milly Bennett as the Wanderers looked for one final push.

Despite their determination and improved attacking display in the second half, the Red & Black were unable to find the breakthrough, with Victory holding on for a narrow 1-0 win at Wanderers Football Park.

Full time

While the result was not the one the Wanderers had hoped for in their opening match of the season, there were plenty of positives to take from a competitive performance at Wanderers Football Park.

The Red & Black enjoyed the greater share of possession and showed determination throughout the contest, continuing to push for an equaliser until the final whistle. Ultimately, Jančevski’s first-half free kick proved the difference between the two sides.

Defensively, the Wanderers showed resilience, with Sarah Langman, Sofia Palywoda and the back line producing important interventions to keep Victory’s opportunities limited and the contest alive until the closing stages.

While creating more clear-cut opportunities in the final third will be a focus moving forward, the performance provided a foundation for Geoff Abrahams’ refreshed squad to build on.

With a new-look playing group and a long season ahead, the Red & Black will look to take the lessons from their opening encounter, continue building their combinations and turn promising passages of play into results in the weeks ahead.
