How the Socceroos and Josh Risdon can qualify: Group C equation

Australia’s 1-1 draw with Denmark in Samara means the Socceroos are still in the hunt to qualify from Group C.

Here’s the Group C equation heading into the final match day:

  • France have already qualified to the Round of 16. They still need a point against Denmark to top the group.
  • Denmark need a point to qualify and will top the group if they defeat France. They’ll also go through if Australia cannot defeat Peru.
  • For Australia to get to the Round of 16, Australia must beat Peru and hope Denmark lose to France by enough goals to overtake them on goal difference.

For example, if Australia win by two or more goals and Denmark lose, the Socceroos will overtake the Danes on points and goal difference.

However, if Australia and Denmark are equal on four points and equal on goal difference at the end of the final game, the tie breaker will then be goals scored.

So, if Australia win 1-0 and Denmark lose 2-1, both points, goal difference and goals scored will be equal.

This means the tie breaker will then be Fair Play standings – taking into consideration yellow and red cards. As it currently stands, Australia has three yellow cards to their name, with Denmark receiving four.

  • Peru’s loss to France means the South American side are already eliminated.
