The Western Sydney Wanderers have today announced the promotion of Mathieu Cordier from the Wanderers Academy to the club’s Hyundai A-League squad.

The versatile defender has been part of the Wanderers Academy system since 2015 and will be on a scholarship contract for the remainder of the season before being promoted to a senior contract in 2019/20.

The West Pymble junior has been a stalwart in both the Wanderers Academy’s Foxtel Y-League and National Premier League sides, and has frequented Young Socceroos selections.

Cordier made his senior debut for the club in the 2018 FFA Cup Semi Final and is grateful for the opportunity of being given his first senior contract with the club.

“I’ve been training with the first team for probably a month now and I have played in some of the pre-season friendly games, so I am just really grateful to finally get my first professional contract,” said Cordier.

“In saying that though, I know the hard work starts now. This is the first step in the right direction but I know there’s still a lot of work to do. I’m happy that I’ve got a secure future at the club.

“It’s a big step up and the requirements of a professional footballer aren’t easy but it’s what I love and what I want to do, so I’m really looking forward to keep on doing that at the Wanderers.

“Obviously, I’m excited for the new training facility and the new stadium, and then looking forward to the rest of the Hyundai A-League season and the season to come.

“I just want to help the team in whatever way I can, make sure I’m training at my best and putting myself in contention for the weekend’s game.”
