This week we’re celebrating the contribution of females to football.
During the week I ran my own Female Football Week with my local association Southern Districts and hosted a ‘Come Try Football’ clinic where I had over 80 girls attend a free two-hour football clinic in Moorebank.
It was a great day and it was fantastic to see so many young girls enjoy the clinic. All the girls left the session with some great memories, new friends and some Wanderers posters of their Westfield W-League and Hyundai A-League role models.
Female Football Week is so important to celebrate as it recognises that there are so many more females out there playing the beautiful game now.
There’s now a whole generation of young girls working hard to sign for a Westfield W-League team or represent our country with the Matildas.
It’s great to see support for females who have aspirations in football and not always just focus on the future development of boys.
When growing up, I didn’t have any inspirational female footballers I looked up to.
Women’s football wasn’t big during the early years of my career but then again, neither were the Socceroos.
I grew up in an Italian household and all we watched was Italian football.
Seeing where women’s football is today and how far it has come is a massive achievement on it’s own and something we should celebrate outside of Female Football Week.
