Wanderers powerchair player Andy Waite has officially broken the record for the most power wheelchair spins in one minute.
The record attempt took place at half-time during the Wanderers clash against Central Coast Mariners at Spotless Stadium on 7 December 2018.
The previous record was 32 spins in one minute and Waite smashed the record, making 120 spins in a minute.
Andy Waite began his sporting career playing Powerchair Hockey in 2002 and in 2004 he was selected for the Powerchair Hockey World Championships in Finland.
Waite went on to compete in two more World Championships for hockey in both 2010 and 2014.
In 2011, Waite took up a new wheelchair sport that had just started in Australia – powerchair football.
Waite began playing as a striker and after a development training camp, he was selected for the Australian team to compete in the 2011 FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup in Paris, France.
In 2012, Waite attempted the Guinness World Record of ‘Most Spins in a Power Wheelchair in One Minute’. The record at the time was 32 spins in one minute and Waite beat the record making 111 spins in one minute, but unfortunately, it was never made official.
A year later, Waite was again selected in the national team for the upcoming Asia Pacific Oceania Cup in Sydney and was named the captain of the side.
Australia went on to finish runners-up in the Asia Pacific Oceania Cup, losing in the final in extra time 2-1.
In 2013, Waite along with two other players entered discussions with the Western Sydney Wanderers to create a Powerchair Team under the Wanderers banner and without any hesitance, the club were proud to take the team on board. Waite is currently the most capped player in the side.
Mid-way through the 2015 Powerchair season, Waite made the transition from striker to goalkeeper and has since made that position his own.
