NPL Wrap: Wanderers hit Spirit for six

The Western Sydney Wanderers have extended their lead at the top of the NPL 2 table to three points after a spectacular 6-0 win against Spirit FC.

Marley Peterson led the way with a hat-trick while Jarrod Carluccio, Rory Jordan, and Mohamed Adam also got on the scoresheet.

The Red & Black attacked from the opening whistle and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Just like last week, it was Peterson with the early strike as his free kick found the net.

Wanderers goalkeeper Elliot Carwardine was called into action a couple of times as Spirit fought back before we doubled our lead on 25 minutes.

After Fabian Monge won possession in midfield, Peterson played a fantastic through ball and Carluccio showed great vision to lob Spirit goalkeeper Tomi Romic from 25 yards.

Thomas Aquilina was putting in a typically energetic performance at right back and getting forward to great effect, forcing two saves from Romic in quick succession.

Then on the stroke of half-time, the Red & Black won another free kick in a good position. Peterson repeated his dead ball heroics from earlier, sending a curling shot into the goal to make it 3-0.

The Wanderers had to withstand some pressure after the interval with both Noah Pagden and Andrea Agamemnonos making crucial blocks in the penalty area.

However, as the Wanderers regained control they also scored their fourth goal. Mohamed Al Taay was the architect, finding Wanderers substitute Rory Jordan with a defence-splitting pass and Jordan made no mistake with the one-on-one opportunity.

It got even better four minutes later. This time, Jordan was the creator, beating an opponent and finding Adam who drilled the ball home for his tenth of the campaign.

The Red & Black weren’t done though and another goal came soon afterwards.

Al Taay played in another wonderful pass for the overlapping Aquilina and although neither Adam nor Jacob Vasiliou could finish, Peterson was in the right place to get his third of the game.

The Wanderers might have even added to the scoreline late on with two goals disallowed for offside and an injury time chance for Jordan that was saved by Romic.

The emphatic win completed a perfect day for the Red & Black after wins in the U18s and U20s.

Next Saturday, the Wanderers will face Bonnyrigg White Eagles at Bonnyrigg Sports Club. Kick-off is at 6:30pm.
