The Wanderers Westfield W-League record against Canberra United doesn’t make for pretty reading, but they will be looking to change all that in their Round 7 clash at McKellar Park.
With the season reaching the halfway mark, Dean Heffernan’s high flying Red & Black will face yet another test against a side that has proved to be a thorn in their side since they first met back in 2012.
The Wanderers have already set a benchmark this season by creating club history with their best start to a season and they would like nothing more than adding a win over United to the list of achievements.
The sobering statistics show that the Wanderers have managed just a sole victory over their rivals, back in January 2017 when they prevailed 1-0 at home.
All up they have met 10 times with Canberra winning six times with three draws. The Wanderers have not beaten United on their home ground in five attempts.

However, as we have seen this season, this is a completely different Wanderers in terms of the quality of the squad to what we have seen in the past.
Players such as Lynn Williams, Kristen Hamilton, Ella Mastrantonio, Denise O’Sullivan, Abby Smith, Amy Harrison, Alex Huynh and Sam Staab have made a huge difference.
They have bought into Heffernan’s footballing philosophy and play a wonderful, exciting brand of football to be the talk of the W-League season to date.
Certainly, the visitors will be looking to extend their competition lead over Canberra, who are breathing down their necks.

The Wanderers will face a Canberra side that also likes to play attacking football under former Matildas legend, Heather Garriock.
A club steeped in W-League success (two championships and three premierships), the current team from the capital boasts a quality squad.
The club’s visa players contains a mix of overseas stars, highlighted by exciting attacker Simone Charley who has been in fine goalscoring touch.
United also have Americans Katie Stengel, a former Wanderer, and Kayleigh Kurtz as well as Brazilian midfielder Camila and Norwegian international Elise Thorsnes.
This should be a fantastic match-up between two outstanding sides with a good crowd expected to roll up at McKellar Park.
