Western Sydney Wanderers FC have confirmed that midfielder and Swiss International Pirmin Schwegler will retire from professional football after tonight’s match against Melbourne Victory at Bankwest Stadium.
Schwegler played at the top level in both Switzerland and Germany for clubs FC Luzern, Young Boys, Bayern Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, 1899 Hoffenheim, and Hannover 96.
A player of vast experience and quality, the midfielder played in over 250 matches in the German Bundesliga and has appeared 14 July for the Swiss national team between 2009 and 2014.
Playing outside of Europe for the first time this season with the Wanderers, Schwegler featured in 23 matches and had four assists.
Western Sydney Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas thanked Pirmin for his contribution to the club this season.
“Pirmin has been a true professional during his time here at the club and we thank him for his contribution this season,” said Tsatsimas.
“We wish Pirmin all the best in the future and in his next stage of life with his family.”
