Australia v Denmark confirmed for Round of 16 clash at Stadium Australia

In case you missed it, the CommBank Matildas Round of 16 opponents were confirmed last night. Following the final Group D games across the country, Denmark progressed through second in the group, booking a Round of 16 clash with the side next Monday at Stadium Australia.

Pernille Harder opened the scoring for her side in Perth when Denmark faced Haiti, finding the opener from the spot. A late goal in stoppage time of the second half from Sanne Troelsgaard Nielsen sealed Denmark’s spot in the knockout stages.

The side finished with six points across the group stage, picking up a late victory over China PR in their World Cup opener and then all three points against tournament debutants Haiti in their final group stage game. Denmark finished behind England in Group D, with the Lionesses finishing with nine points after making it three wins in the group stage.

This will be the second meeting between the two sides in less than a year, with a come-from-behind victory in Viborg in October 2022 seeing the CommBank Matildas pick up their first-ever victory over Denmark. A brace to Caitlin Foord and a wonder strike from Katrina Gorry sealed the win.
