Western Sydney Wanderers FC have tonight confirmed that Liberty A-Leagues captain Clare Hunt has departed to sign with French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain.
Hunt joined the Wanderers back in 2021 and quickly became an integral part of the Red & Black, going on to win the prestigious Wanderers Medal in her first season at the club.
A natural leader, Hunt was named captain of the club in her second season and went on to feature in almost every match during the 2022/23 A-Leagues season.
During her time at the Wanderers, the defender was given her first national team call up for the CommBank Matildas and her debut was deemed as one of the greatest head coach Tony Gustavsson has seen in his career.
Hunt was then named in the Matildas FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 squad and was integral in Australia’s run in the tournament.
The defender will now depart Western Sydney to sign with French giants Paris Saint-Germain and thanked the Wanderers for the role they played in her development over the last two years.
“I had the best two years of football experience at the Western Sydney Wanderers and want to thank the club for providing me an opportunity two years,” said Hunt.
“I have loved every minute at the club and thank every single player, coaching and back-room staff for their support and involvement in my development.
“It has been an honour to represent Western Sydney and the opportunity to move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, is one that I couldn’t resist.
“I will always fondly remember my time at the Red & Black and wish the club every success moving forward. I am eager to see the progression of the Club, and specifically the Women’s programs, over the coming years.”
Head of Women’s Football Tom Sermanni said it was fantastic to see Clare rewarded for her performances.
“It is fantastic to see Clare being rewarded for her outstanding performances for Wanderers and the Matildas,” said Sermanni.
“She is a great example to all Liberty A-League players as to what can be achieved by consistency performing at the highest level week in and week out.
“It is also a great compliment to the Wanderers who have helped her develop her potential and achieve her goal of playing football at highest level.”
Head coach Kat Smith spoke highly of Clare’s professionalism and leadership attributes.
“Clare’s on field performances are complemented by her leadership skills and professionalism which had a tremendous impact on her teammates.”
