Club-Record Transfer Fee: Younis departs club for overseas opportunity with Brøndby IF

Western Sydney Wanderers FC have tonight confirmed the transfer of Marcus Younis to Danish Superliga side Brøndby IF for a new club-record transfer fee.

Younis first joined the Wanderers Academy at the age of 12 and rose through the ranks to the first team, making more than 15 senior appearances across all competitions.

The 19-year-old spent last season on loan with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, where he impressed with 26 appearances and five goals for their U21 side in the Eredivisie youth competition.

He recently returned to Western Sydney for pre-season preparations, featuring in the Hahn Australia Cup as well as the club’s international friendly in Indonesia against Persib Bandung.

Younis’ move continues a strong Winter Transfer Period for the Red & Black, with the Academy graduate joining fellow Wanderers products Nicolas Milanovic and Zac Sapsford in making the move to European football.

Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson congratulated Marcus on the deal with Brøndby IF.

“Marcus has been an outstanding representative of our club both on and off the pitch,” said Hudson.

“His move to Europe highlights the pathway we are creating for young players in Western Sydney.

“We are immensely proud of what Marcus has achieved during his time with the Red & Black and while we will miss him here at the club, we are excited to see him take this next step and continue to grow his career abroad.”

Head coach Alen Stajcic said he was proud of Marcus and wishes him all the best on his journey.

“We are proud of Marcus as a Wanderers youth product achieving a long-term deal at a big European club,” said Stajcic.

“It’s a testament both to his own hard work, perseverance and dedication, and those close to him who had a hand in his development.

“We wish Marcus all the best on his football journey.”

Marcus Younis thanked everyone for their support over the last nine years.

“After 9 years and with a season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, my time at Western Sydney has come to an end,” said Younis.

“Western Sydney took me in as a kid, helped me grow, mature and shape me into the player I am today.

“To my teammates, staff, the club and the Red & Black Bloc, thank you for the belief, the countless opportunities and constant support from the very beginning.

“I leave with nothing but love, gratitude, and the memories of a place that will always be my home.”
