FFA Cup Round of 32 action continues on Wednesday night with Broadmeadow Magic hosting Western Sydney Wanderers at Newcastle No.2 Sports Ground at 7:30pm AEDT.
Magic are looking to cause a ‘Cupset’ on Wednesday night as they go up against Isuzu UTE A-League opposition for the first time in what is their fifth appearance in the national rounds.
A 2-1 win over Weston Workers secured Magic’s spot in the Round of 32 in a cup run that saw them score 18 goals in wins over Port Macquarie, Edgeworth and Kotara South.
Magic – who are a powerhouse of the NPL Northern NSW competition – sat fourth when the league was abandoned as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic after 16 rounds.
Former Newcastle Jets winger, James Virgili, who scored the winner against Weston Workers to send Magic into the Round of 32, top scored for Broadmeadow in 2021, netting nine NPL Northern NSW goals.
Wednesday’s match will be a first competitive hit out of the 2021/22 season for Carl Robinson’s new-look Wanderers side.
Wanderers have added Ramy Najjarine, Tomer Hemed, Rhys Williams, Terry Antonis, Johnny Koutroumbis, Dimitri Petratos, Keijiro Ogawa, Tomas Mejias and Jordan Swibel to what shapes up as an impressive squad ahead of the new season.
Western Sydney have played three pre-season fixtures so far defeating Central Coast Mariners 2-0, drawing 3-3 with Blacktown City, and most recently suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wellington Phoenix.
The Wanderers, who finished eighth in the A-League last season have previously faced Northern NSW opposition once in the FFA Cup, defeating Edgeworth Eagles 5-1 in the Round of 16 in 2016.
The Wanderers are one of six A-League sides to have been on the wrong end of a ‘Cupset’, going down 1-0 to Adelaide City in 2014.
Wanderers have reached the FFA Cup Semi Finals twice, reaching the last four in 2017 & 2018.
