Western Sydney Wanderers FC have today confirmed that Geoff Abrahams has been appointed the Youth Technical Director of the Wanderers Girls Academy set to launch in 2025.
Abrahams has been part of the Wanderers set-up since 2017 and has worked in a number of roles across the club’s youth and women’s development space.
Within the development space, Abrahams played a pivotal role in establishing the club’s Pre-Academy Development Program and within the Women’s space has been coaching in the club’s Future Wander Women Program.
Outside of the Western Sydney Wanderers, Abrahams has been working at Sydney Olympic with their first grade Women’s side.
Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson said he was pleased with the appointment of Abraham’s to the club’s new Girls Academy.
“Geoff has been part of the club for the last seven years and we have seen him contribute to the development of the next generation of stars in both our Women’s and Men’s teams,” said Hudson.
“Over the last year, Geoff has been a standout in the development and progression of players from our Future Wander Women team and is a fantastic cultural fit to our new Western Sydney Wanderers Girls Academy.
“Geoff also alongside his role as Youth Technical Director of the Wanderers Girls Academy will also be our National Premier League head coach for the first grade side.
“We will be making more announcements soon on the future of our Wanderers Girls Academy and have received an overwhelming amount of interest in registrations.”
Western Sydney Wanderers Women’s Technical Director Geoff Abrahams said he was excited to help the progression of players in the Academy.
Wanderers Head of Women’s Football and current CommBank Matildas interim head coach Tom Sermanni praised Geoff’s progression through the club’s coaching ranks.
“We are very delighted with how Geoff has progressed through our Wanderers Academy coaching ranks and have been thrilled with his contribution to our Future Wander Women Program,” said Sermanni.
“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Geoff over the next year as we look to continue to develop some of the best young talent in the region.”
“My strength has always been in youth development. I have coached most of the young boys that have come through this club and moved into the A-League, and have been part of nearly every age group at some point,” said Abrahams.
“I moved into the women’s space with our Future Wander Women Program, and I have been able to work within that, and really enjoy that.
“I think it is important to capitalise on the popularity and growth of women’s football and build the appropriate infrastructure and pathways to support it.
“If we are able to develop these young players, and catch all these thousands of girls playing football now, we have an opportunity to raise the overall standard of Australian football, and in turn we can offer them a proper pathway to the A-League, national teams, and beyond.”
