The Wanderers come into tonight’s clash against the Jets after a confident 4-0 victory over Wellington Phoenix last Sunday.
With the squad starting to build momentum towards the end of the season, Gombau says the win has come at the right time for team morale ahead of such a massive match.
“For sure, when the team wins games there is always confidence,” said Gombau.
“Tonight is an important game for us and we’ve worked very hard during the week.
“I think that tonight will be a good test of what position our team is in.”
Tonight’s match will mark the third meeting between the Wanderers and the Jets with Newcastle running away as the winners in a 4-0 thumping of the Red & Black in Round 12.
Gombau hopes that the tables will be turned tonight with the Wanderers seeking revenge on the Novocastrians.
“For sure, it should be (about revenge),” said Gombau.
“We spoke with the boys and we need to have this inside us to try to play a good game, win the game and bring this to our fans that travelled to Newcastle and felt the big loss.
“For us, the important thing is to have the ball and once you have the ball the other team cannot attack.
“We will also try to press hard when we have the ball and recover the ball back as soon as possible.
“I think tonight’s match is very important, it’s massive. We’re in a position now where if we win we can have an advantage over some teams and we should do it.
“We need to win and have three more points that will help us get a good position on the table.”
