The Western Sydney Wanderers fought hard for a 0-0 draw against Sydney FC on Sunday, a result that left the team with mixed emotions.
Despite the frustration of missing out on three points, Hooks was proud of the defensive effort that secured a clean sheet against one of the league’s toughest sides.
The backline had to work relentlessly, and Hooks believes there are lessons to carry into upcoming games.
“It’s a bit frustrating in the end, but our record against them over the years hasn’t been great, so I’m happy to come away with a clean sheet, especially with how hard the backline worked. There’s definitely stuff we can take out of that,” reflected Hooks.

Hooks also reflected on her partnership in defence with Alanna Cerne and what it has been like to return to the A-League.
The combination of experience and chemistry has strengthened the team’s defensive foundation.
“It’s definitely a challenge with the style and lifestyle changes, but talking about Alanna Cerne, it’s great to have another new person in the club.
“We get along so well. I wouldn’t have anyone playing next to me other than her,” she explained.
While the clean sheet was a highlight, the team will look to improve its attacking output. Hooks pointed to the importance of taking chances when they arise and keeping morale high even when opportunities are missed.
“We just need to make the chances count. It’s not great we didn’t finish them on the day, but it’s good to know we can do it eventually. The message for the girls on the pitch was to keep our heads up and be proud of ourselves for getting to that place in the first place,” Hooks said.
Confidence continues to build as the team gels week by week, with Hooks highlighting how the squad is starting to hit its stride and embrace the style of play the coaching staff is fostering.
“I feel like we’re definitely getting better each week. The effort everyone puts into training is paying off, and the football we play is just so enjoyable. With everyone here, it’s definitely easier to play the way Geoff wants and the way we want to play. It feels like we’re really coming together as a family.”
