League One Preview: Wanderers v Northern Tigers

We may only be five rounds into the season, but there is already an exciting top of the table clash to take place in the FNSW League One season between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Northern Tigers at Wanderers Football Park.

The Wanderers continued their hot streak in front of goal in a 5-2 win over Mounties last round, with Alex Badolato bagging a double and Alessandro Lopane scoring a goal of the season contender.

Despite head coach Tomi Vidovic being absent, Vidovic would have been hugely impressed with his side’s response after a defeat in a previous game.

The Northern Tigers meanwhile are the only undefeated side left in the competition, with a draw and three wins, including a late 2-1 win at home over a spirited St George FC.

They have the second best attack in the league with 13 goals, and players like Oliver Scott and Hiyori Kawaguchi have been highly impressive going forward.

Most notably, the Tigers won 8-2 in their opening match of the season against Blacktown Spartans; much like the Wanderers, they have the ability to flick a switch and blow teams away.

These two sides finished second and third in the truncated 2021 season, with the Wanderers winning at home 3-1 before the points were shared in the return fixture in Turramurra.

A similarly tight clash can be expected on Sunday afternoon, with both teams wanting to pull away from the rest of the competition.

The Wanderers will be looking to Dean Pelekanos to lead the team in midfield and for Jordi Swibel to get back amongst the goals, the striker firing his first blank of the season last time out.
