League One Semi Final Preview: Wanderers v St George

It’s finals time in the FNSW League One competition as the Wanderers travel to face St George City FA in the preliminary semi final at Penshurst Park on Saturday.

The boys in Red & Black are in red hot form, having won their last five games scoring 18 goals in the process.

Whilst some of the wins have been blowouts or end to end thrillers, last week’s 2-1 victory over Blacktown Spartans showed the side has the ability to grind out a result in a tight game.

Zac Sapsford’s 67th minute header eventually separated the two sides after the scores were locked at half-time.

Connor Rose was impressive as he grabbed an assist and was a constant threat down the left wing, whilst Dean Pelekanos was the provider for the winning goal at personal cost; he sustained an injury in the act and had to be substituted.

St George City also ended the season in a strong run of form, being unbeaten in their final eight games, winning six of them.

They defeated Hills United in their final regular season match, with Reuben Awaritefe scoring twice.

Captain Tarik Ercan has been highly impressive in the midfield with his ability to shield the back four as well as initiating attacks, whilst Jakub Praza, Paolo Mitry and Jordan Morfitis can pose problems for any defence.

The sides won a game each in the regular season matchups; with St George winning 3-2 back in March, whilst the Wanderers put in one of their strongest performances in the return fixture, emerging 2-0 winners at Wanderers Football Park.

With the losing side getting a second chance in the finals, it should be great Saturday afternoon football as both sides go all out to earn the chance to take on the Central Coast Mariners in a grand final qualifier next week.
