The Western Sydney Wanderers FNSW League One side returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, defeating Hakoah Sydney City East 5-1 at Hensley Athletic Field on Saturday night.
Without a win in their past three games, the young Wanderers side knew that a victory would be vital to ensure they keep in touch with the promotion places, and they did that in style with a five star performance.
And they had to do it the hard way, coming from behind after conceding early when a deflected Steven Sohn strike looped over Jack Warshawsky and gave the home side the lead.
The Wanderers settled, though, and soon exerted themselves on the contest, and they soon found themselves level in the 18th minute through Connor Rose.
Captain Dean Pelekanos sent a wonderful through-ball that split the defence, and the winger expertly finished past Nikolas Loe.
And the Wanderers took the lead just nine minutes later, when Daniel Wilmering’s curling effort from the edge of the area found its way into the top corner of the goal.
The boys in Red & Black were in full control of the tie, and added a third just after half-time, when Jakov Malbasa pounced on a poor defensive header to lash the ball home.
Alex Badolato upped his impressive goal tally to six when he rolled a George Antonis pass into the goal in the 56th minute, whilst substitute Alex Denmead completed the rout in the 76th minute with an expertly finished volley from a Badolato cross.
Tomi Vidovic would have been delighted with his side’s performance, as they were able to put in a dominant performance without the service of some key players.
The win means the side stay in 5th place, but are now only a point off the top four places; they are on the road again next week as they take on SD Raiders.
