The 2023/24 Liberty A-League season is set to kick off with a blockbuster opening weekend, as fixtures are moved to larger venues to match the hype for the standalone celebration of women’s football.
Round One features two derbies, including Central Coast Mariners v Newcastle Jets on Saturday, October 14 in the former’s first A-League Women fixture since 2009, to kick-start the club’s new era at Industree Group Stadium.
Defending champions Sydney FC, bolstered by the announcement of Matildas star Cortnee Vine’s re-signing, will also host Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium in the second derby of the season’s opening day.
Adelaide United’s clash with Canberra United on Sunday, October 15 is set to take place at Coopers Stadium, while Wellington Phoenix v Melbourne City will kick-off at Sky Stadium, with three venues that heaved during the FIFA Women’s World Cup being used for the league’s opening weekend.
Building off the unprecedented hype of the Women’s World Cup, the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) has established the aim to break domestic attendance records on the opening weekend.
With the Liberty Pass enabling kids under-16 able to attend games for free, and every game streamed live and free on 10Play in the longest campaign in the competition’s history, the A-League Women is set to break new ground in 2023-24.
Speaking on KEEPUP’s Dub at the Cup last week, Western United and Matildas midfielder Chloe Logarzo issued a rallying cry to Matildas fans to get a taste of the domestic league.
“You’ve seen the incredible support…it is over 60% of Australia that watched that one game (against England),” she said. “If we could get a small percentage of that to come on board to the A-League, it would be incredible
“I’ve talked about the connection the Matildas have brought people, the love and connection people have brought people you can see in the grandstand, that’s the same in the A-League.”
