With an extensive global resume and several trophies to his name, Marcelo touched down in Western Sydney in early August ahead of the coming A-Leagues season.
The towering defender has been resolute in the Red & Black’s pre-season campaign and has had an important impact on the team’s culture both on and off the field.
A born winner, Marcelo has been in Europe for majority of his career with sides like Wisla Krakow, PSV Eindhoven, Hannover 96, Besiktas, Lyon and Bordeaux.
The announcement of his captaincy was revealed by head coach Marko Rudan yesterday at the Red & Black Bloc’s 10 Year Anniversary Event at Hammondville oval.
Head coach Marko Rudan spoke highly of his appointment of Marcelo as captain.
“We have many leaders in our squad this season with a number of experienced players that could have filled this role,” said Rudan.
“Marcelo has been a standout since his arrival at the club and has an unmatched global experience.
“We hope that he can continue his success here in Western Sydney as we build towards a very important season ahead.”
Marcelo said he was very proud to wear the captain’s armband.
“I would firstly like to thank head coach Marko Rudan for the opportunity in not only bringing me to the Western Sydney Wanderers but also for naming me as captain of this incredible club,” said Marcelo.
“Since the first day I arrived, I have been accepted as part of the family and it is an honour to lead the team this season.
“We have big expectations for ourselves and will fight until the end to achieve them.
“We are very excited to see the stands full when we return to CommBank Stadium next Sunday to face Perth Glory in our first match of the 2022/23 Isuzu UTE A-Leagues season.”
