Match Preview: Canberra v Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers travel to face Canberra United on Saturday for an A-League Women clash at McKellar Park.

Canberra United are in fifth place on 17 points through 12 matches. Canberra won their last A-League Women match 2-1 at home against Sydney.

Western Sydney Wanderers’ last league match saw them triumph 1-0 over Wellington Phoenix at home, putting them in eighth place on 14 points.

The previous A-League Women fixture between the clubs saw Canberra come out on top 5-0 at Wanderers Football Park last season. Margot Robinne led Canberra United Women with two goals, scoring in the 85th and 90th minute. Michelle Heyman, Chelsee Washington, and Chloe Middleton also found the net.

The performances of Heyman have been important for Canberra this season.

The striker leads the club with seven goals, which is tied for the second highest in the league in 2022/2023, three of which have been the tone-setting first of the match.

Western Sydney Wanderers’ leading lights in attack have been Sophie Harding, Olivia Price, and Amy Harrison, who have each netted twice.

Hosts Canberra have three wins, one draw, and two losses this season in six A-League Women contests at home. Wanderers will be looking for their first victory this season in away league matches, as they have five losses and one draw away from Wanderers Football Park.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC Women will be out to end a 10-match away winless streak (W0 D2 L8). They haven’t won away since January 2022 against Brisbane Roar.

In their last six league matches, Canberra have won four and lost two. Wanderers, meanwhile, have won three, drawn one and lost two in their last six.
