Match Preview: Wanderers v Adelaide

Adelaide United are on the road to face Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday for an A-League Men clash at CommBank Stadium.

Adelaide United defeated Wellington Phoenix 5-1 at home in their last league match to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 (W6 D4 L0), leaving them in second place on 37 points through 21 matches. They are four points behind first-placed Melbourne City.

Western Sydney Wanderers sit in third place on 34 points, seven points behind first-placed Melbourne City through 21 matches. Wanderers also won their last A-League Men match 4-0 at Allianz Stadium against Sydney.

The previous A-League Men fixture between the clubs saw them play out a 4-4 draw at Coopers Stadium in February. Hiroshi Ibusuki led the Reds with two goals, netting in the 32nd and 67th minute. Brandon Borrello led the Wanderers with two goals, netting in the 46th and 50th minute.

Wanderers have got the better of Adelaide Utd of late, unbeaten in their last five A-League Men matches (W1 D4 L0). Adelaide Utd are looking for their first league win in games between the two sides since February 2021. The Wanderers have outscored the Reds 9-8 during their unbeaten streak.

Craig Goodwin has been the most prolific player for Adelaide Utd, scoring on 10 occasions, including three match-opening goals. He ranks fourth among the league’s top scorers in 2022/2023.

The form of Borrello has been important for Wanderers this season. The striker leads the club with eight goals, which is the fifth highest in the league, three of those having been the tone-setting first of the match.

On home soil this season, Wanderers have six wins, two draws, and two losses in 10 A-League Men contests. Adelaide Utd have earned 14 points from 33 available this season in league matches on their travels (W3 D5 L3). The Reds will be out to extend a four-match away unbeaten streak (W2 D2 L0). They haven’t been beaten away since January 7 against Central Coast Mariners.

In their last six league matches, Wanderers have won three, drawn one and lost two. Adelaide Utd, meanwhile, have won four and drawn two in their last six.
