Match Preview: Wanderers v Newcastle

Western Sydney Wanderers play host to Newcastle Jets on Saturday in an A-League Women match between two teams looking to build some momentum.

Western Sydney Wanderers are in ninth place on eight points through 10 matches. Wanderers were defeated 1-0 in their last A-League Women match at Casey Fields against Melbourne City, ending a four-match unbeaten streak (W2 D2 L0).

Newcastle Jets suffered a 5-1 defeat against Canberra United at McKellar Park in their last A-League Women match

Newcastle won the last A-League Women meeting between the clubs, emerging victorious 4-2 at No.2 Sportsground in November. Sarah Griffith led Newcastle Jets Women with three goals, netting in the 12th, 36th, and 58th minute. Tara Andrews also found the net. Melissa Caceres and Amy Harrison were on target for Western Sydney Wanderers FC Women.

Newcastle have got the better of Wanderers of late, unbeaten in their last four A-League Women matches (W2 D2 L0). Wanderers are looking for their first league win in games between the two sides since January 2021. Newcastle Jets Women have outscored Western Sydney Wanderers FC Women 11-6 during their unbeaten streak.

Harrison and Sheridan Gallagher have proved attacking threats for Wanderers this season. The pair are the team’s joint top scorers with two goals. Gallagher has scored the tone-setting first goal of the match once.

Andrews and Griffith are Newcastle Jets’ leading scorers, each netting four times.

Hosts Wanderers have two wins, one draw, and two losses this season in five A-League Women contests at Wanderers Football Park. Western Sydney Wanderers FC Women will be out to prolong a three-match home unbeaten streak (W2 D1 L0) dating to earlier this month against Melbourne City.

Ending their league away-day frustrations will be the aim for Newcastle, who have not yet found their form this season away from No.2 Sportsground with four losses in four matches.

Newcastle Jets Women are on an eight-match away losing streak. The last time they didn’t lose away was December 2021 against Wellington Phoenix.

In their last six league matches, Wanderers have won two, drawn two and lost two. Newcastle, meanwhile, have won one and lost five in their last six.
