Western Sydney Wanderers FC have today confirmed the signing of defender Tomislav Mrcela as an injury-replacement for captain Rhys Williams until the end of the season.
Mrcela comes to Western Sydney after a recent spell in the Indian Super League with SC East Bengal where he featured in nine matches.
The experienced defender has had an extensive career overseas which has seen him play in the top-flight of the Croatian league with Hrvatski Dragovoljac and Lokomotiva Zagreb, as well as Jeonnam Dragons in the K-League.
Mrcela returned to Australia in 2018 where he played for Perth Glory for two seasons, contributing heavily to the team’s success and winning the Premiers Plate in 2019.
The 193cm defender said he was excited to get started at the Red & Black.
“I’m really excited to finally be here, it’s a privilege to be part of a big club like this and I can’t wait to get started,” said Mrcela.
“It’s been almost more than two years since I’ve been back and I’ve been in India a little bit, so it’s nice to be back in the A-League and back in a good level at a good club.
“I’ve played a few games at CommBank Stadium and you can really feel it as an opponent, that there is a pressure to play for the Western Sydney Wanderers but it is also a privilege.
“It’s nice to be part of this club and play with those passionate fans behind you, hopefully they can push us to some success this season.
“I hope I can bring experience and leadership, I think we have a really good team with good characters and good leaders inside it.”
