NPL 1 Preview: Wanderers v Sutherland Sharks

The boys in Red & Black will have a point to prove when the Sutherland Sharks visit Wanderers Football Park for Easter Sunday NPL NSW action.

The Wanderers come into this match off the back of a disappointing 4-0 loss at home to Marconi; the side only trailed 1-0 at half-time and had chances to level the scores, the concession of three second half goals ensured a heavy defeat.

It was a tough result to take, but Andrew Christiansen’s side will be looking to move on quickly from that match, as a set of favourable fixtures has presented the Wanderers with a great chance to reboot their season, starting with this clash against Sutherland.

The Sharks only sit a point ahead of the Wanderers, and also have the worst attack in the league with just five goals scored; two of those goals did come in a surprise 2-0 away success over Marconi in round seven. It presents a great opportunity for the Wanderers to keep a first clean sheet of the season.

Whilst Sutherland sit in 12th place, they still have quality players in their squad that the Wanderers will need to look out for.

Former Wanderer Connor Rose – who scored nine goals for the club last season – has played eight games for the Sharks so far.

Centre back Mitchell Stamatellis has arguably been their
shining light; a classy centre-back, he was named as the NPL NSW defender of the month.

Brodie Clarkson has also impressed in midfield with his passing ability, having picked up a couple of assists from the centre of the park.

It is set to be an intriguing contest as both sides search for a third win of the season, with the Wanderers having the chance to leapfrog their opponents on the table with a win.
