The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 Women’s side have gone down 2-1 to the Northern Tigers as they fall to their fifth consecutive loss.
The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side faced the Northern Tigers in an effort to snap a four-game losing streak. Despite a late surge, they were unable to overturn a two-goal deficit, falling 2-1 to the North Turramurra outfit.
Haley Johnson would start the game in fine form as the dangerous striker looked to add to her 10 goals, with a strike in the eleventh minute that travelled wide of the goal.
Christa Oliva was close to opening the scoring as the young Wanderer’s shot was kept out by Tiger’s Goalkeeper Jasmine Black.
Despite the majority of the first half being a battle for midfield dominance, a deflected lobbed pass into the attacking third would prove costly as Johnson would latch onto the bouncing ball and collect her eleventh of the season.
Thus, sending the Tigers into half time with an unexpected lead, and the Wanderers searching for answers in the second half.
The opportunity to equalise fell to the feet of Amy Barker following a perfectly timed Alyssa McKenzie cross, but the midfielder’s shot was struck above the crossbar and wayward of goal.
Chelsea Barton brought down Johnson in the box, which would see the Tigers awarded a decisive penalty that Johnson would convert to double their lead.
Miriam Zumaya would put Olivia Vanderlaan into space, who would then cross it in for Catalina Wrzynski to give the Red and Black a chance at potentially rescuing a point.
This potential resurgence would ultimately fall short, as the Wanderers succumb to their fifth consecutive loss.
The result mars what was an improved performance compared to their outing against Mount Druitt Town Rangers. Despite the progress, the loss sees the Red and Black slip closer to the bottom half of the table, now sitting in ninth place.
The Wanderers return home as they take on the Jets in a must win clash if they intend on playing finals football this season.
