NPL 1 Women’s Wrap: UNSW defeat Wanderers 1-0 at the Village Green

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 Women’s side were defeated 1-0 at The Village Green in what can only be described as an arm wrestle, with UNSW walking away victors in a tight clash.

The Wanderers travelled to The Village Green to end an unfortunate run of five games without a win against a UNSW side that has been dealing with its own consistency issues.

Amy Chessari, Milly Bennett, and Talia Younis made a return to the NPL side. Erin Gordon made her second consecutive start in the side as the reinforcements looked to help break a treacherous run of form.

Maryam Mostaghimi struck early with a shot from distance as UNSW looked to get on the front foot in the early stages of the game, but her shot drifted wide of the goal.

We would find ourselves on the cusp of an open chance on more than one occasion as Miriam Zumaya would find herself in space but was unable to find Anika Stajcic with the final ball.

In a half of minimal chances, the two clearest chances would fall to UNSW as Marcella Santos would be denied by a rushing Aimee Hall, who would parry it into the path of Demi Koulizakis, who would be denied by a sliding Erin Gordon.

The game’s only goal would come moments later, as Abbie Lemon would latch onto the end of a turnover to put the ball in the back of the net from distance, finding the bottom right corner with her strike.

Following the break, Zumaya’s cross-turned-shot would come within inches of finding the back of the net.

Nikkita Fazarri would present the Wanderers with their best chance of the game after a fantastic sequence of dribbles and a cutback, which would find Olivia Vanderlaan, whose shot was blocked by a charging UNSW defence.

UNSW would see out the game 1-0 as the Wanderers fall to their sixth straight game without a win, they take on the Macarthur Rams in what shapes to be a six-point game as a loss will bring 13th placed Rams on level points with the Wanderers.
