NPL 1 Women’s Wrap: Wanderers fight off Rams

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side have defeated the Macarthur Rams following a dominant second half performance at Lynwood Park on Monday.

The Western Sydney Wanderers have defeated Macarthur Rams to go four games unbeaten in the NPL NSW Women’s Competition.

A second half blitz was enough to see off the Macarthur side as the Red and Black continue to impress with their recent form.

The Rams started off this game on the front foot, creating a host of chances in the opening stages of the game, which culminated in a 19th minute opener for Tea Mucenski.

The Wanderers lifted the tempo in search of an equaliser after conceding the opener. Anika Stajcic delivered a superb cross, but Talia Kapetenellis couldn’t trouble Isabella Coelho in goal.

It wasn’t until the 38th minute where an Amelia Cassar through ball found Miriam Zumaya for a fantastic first time finish into the bottom right corner.

The Wanderers attack had looked as fluid as ever, with Stajcic, Zumaya, Kapetanellis and Cassar playing across the frontline in tandem, causing plenty of issues for the Rams defence.

Jasmine Selva made a fantastic one on one save in the 55th minute to deny Halle Callow, followed by a catch from distance from a Libby Morris strike. This was a true testament to the young keeper’s improvement following the disappointing draw against UNSW.

A superb first touch and finish from Nikkita Fazzari, following an overhead pass from Anika Stajcic, saw the Red and Black reclaim the lead in the 72nd minute after capitalising on a misjudged Rams clearance. Coming off the bench, Fazzari once again highlighted the growing impact of the Wanderers’ substitutes and their influence on recent results.

Selva denied Mucinski with another great one on one save to deny Macarthur the equalizer, which was closely followed by a great piece of footwork and skill from Fazzari to find Cassar for a tap-in to double the Red and Black lead.

Callow pulled one back for the Rams with a strike into the top right corner, but it wasn’t enough, as the Wanderers held on for their third win in four matches, climbing to fifth on the ladder—just four points behind leaders Mount Druitt Town Rangers.

They return home to Wanderers Football Park this Sunday as they take on the Macarthur Bulls Academy in hope they can extend their unbeaten streak to five games.
