NPL 1 Wrap: Wanderers bounce back with dominant win over St George FC

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side returned to form in emphatic fashion, producing a commanding 4-0 victory over St George FC at Barton Park.

Coming into the match under pressure, the Red and Black delivered a response built not just on attacking quality, but ontheir ability to absorb and manage a possession-heavy St George side. Rather than chasing the game, the Wanderers remained compact and organised out of possession, allowing St George to control phases of the ball before striking decisively when opportunities presented themselves.

That approach paid off almost immediately. Jai Rose opened the scoring inside the first three minutes, capitalising on an early moment of disorganisation to give the Wanderers the perfect platform. Just seven minutes later, Atiya Waraga doubled the advantage, again exposing space in transition and finishing calmly to put the visitors firmly in control.

While St George looked to respond by building through sustained spells of possession, the Wanderers showed maturityin their defensive structure. They limited clear-cut chances, forced their opponents into less dangerous areas, and remained patient in waiting for the right moments to counter.

The defining moment of the contest came midway through the first half when Oscar Morrison produced a moment ofpure brilliance, striking from inside his own half to catch the goalkeeper off his line and extend the lead. It was a goal that not only showcased awareness and technique, but also summed up the Wanderers’ willingness to be bold when the opportunity arose.

Despite St George continuing to see plenty of the ball, clear chances remained limited, with Tristan Vidackovic called upon to make a number of important interventions to preserve the clean sheet and maintain control of the contest.

The Wanderers’ ability to “strike when the iron was hot” was again evident late in the match. After weathering another spell of pressure, Awan Lual was brought down in the area before stepping up to convert from the penalty spot in the 81st minute, sealing a comprehensive result.

It was a performance built on balance, disciplined without the ball, efficient with it, and clinical in key moments. Against aside that thrives on possession, the Wanderers showed they can adapt their approach, remain patient, and punish teams when opportunities arise.

A much-needed three points, and a performance that could prove a turning point as the Red and Black look to build momentum heading into the coming rounds.
