The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side were edged 1-0 by the Marconi Stallions on Saturday night at Wanderers Football Park, with a first-half strike proving decisive in a tightly contested Round Eight encounter.
The Red & Black began brightly and almost found an immediate breakthrough within the opening minute. A swift attacking move involving Awan Lual created space for Harper Ryles, who shaped to shoot from the edge of the areabut sent his effort narrowly wide of the far post.
That early chance sparked a lively opening period, but Marconi soon settled into the contest and began to apply pressure through sustained spells of possession. The Wanderers defence was called into action repeatedly in the opening exchanges, with several dangerous deliveries and second-ball situations needing urgent intervention inside the penalty area.
Marko Jesic then capitalised on a turnover deep in Wanderers territory. After possession was lost during the build-up, Cameron Windust reacted quickly to release Jesic through on goal, and the experienced forward struck with a composed finish to give Marconi the lead.

The Wanderers looked to respond positively and continued to search for openings. Jesic threatened again later in thehalf with a close-range header, while Nathan Barrie’s delivery across goal caused further concern before the break.
The Wanderers returned after halftime determined to wrestle back momentum, though an early defensive scare almost allowed Marconi to double their advantage. Tristan Vidackovic recovered well after a loose touch, first with a timely intervention and then with a strong punch under pressure to keep the deficit at one.
As the half progressed, The Wanderers began to create more promising moments. Their best opening came in the 56th minute when Awan Lual broke into the box from the left and looked set to pull the trigger, only for a superb last-ditch challenge from Windust to deny the equaliser at the crucial moment.

Marconi continued to carry a threat on transition and nearly extended their lead midway through the second half when an effort crashed against the crossbar before Vidackovic produced an outstanding one-handed save moments later to keep the Wanderers within reach.
The Wanderers pushed late in search of a leveller, with substitute Georgio Hassarati injecting energy in the closingstages and nearly creating a decisive opening after chasing down a loose ball inside the area.
Despite a determined finish and improved attacking pressure late in the contest, the Wanderers were unable to find the breakthrough as Marconi left Wanderers Football Park with all three points.
The Red and black will now look to regroup quickly and turn their attention to next week’s game against APIA Leichhardt as they aim to respond strongly in round nine.
