The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side produced one of their most complete performances of the season on Saturday night, defeating Sydney Olympic 4-0 at Belmore Sports Ground in a clinical display.
Having entered the match off consecutive wins, the Wanderers carried confidence from the outset and immediately looked intent on dictating the tempo. Their pressure without the ball unsettled Olympic early, while quick combinations through midfield repeatedly opened space behind the home side’s defensive line.
That early intent was rewarded midway through the first half when Nathan Barrie stepped forward and delivered anincisive ball from deep to release Alaat Abdul-Rahman down the flank. The winger drove forward with purpose before squaring across goal for Awan Lual, who arrived perfectly to finish from close range and hand the Wanderers the lead.
Only minutes later, the Wanderers doubled their advantage through another moment of quick attacking play. Jai Rose lifted a clever ball forward that forced uncertainty in the Olympic back line, and Lual reacted quickest to the loose ball, calmly placing his finish into the bottom corner to put the visitors firmly in control.
The Wanderers continued to threaten throughout the remainder of the half, with Rocco MacNamara and Abdul-Rahman both finding dangerous positions as the visitors repeatedly stretched Olympic across wide areas. At the other end, Tristan Vidackovic was called upon when needed, producing an important save late in the first half to preserve the two-goal advantage and ensure the Wanderers entered the break with full control of the contest.
Sydney Olympic attempted to lift their intensity after half-time, but Western Sydney remained composed and disciplined defensively, limiting clear openings while continuing to look dangerous on transition. Lual came close to completing his hat-trick shortly after the hour mark, only to be denied by a desperate goal-line intervention after another threateningmove inside the penalty area.
The forward would not be denied for long. In the 77th minute, Atiya Waraga’s low delivery into the area found Lual once again in the right position, with the striker finishing from close range to complete an outstanding hat-trick and cap another highly influential performance in front of goal.
The Wanderers added a fourth late in the match through substitute Tristan Arrarte, who reacted quickest after another dangerous Waraga delivery caused problems inside the box. Arrarte’s persistence ensured the visitors finished the evening with further reward for a performance that had grown stronger as the match progressed.
Vidackovic then preserved the clean sheet in the closing stages, saving a late penalty as the Wanderers completed an emphatic away victory and continued their rise up the ladder.
The result marks another important step forward for the young Wanderers side, who continue to show increasing maturity, attacking sharpness and control as the season gathers momentum.
