NPL Preview: Sydney Derby

The Wanderers take on the Sky Blues in what will be a historic top of the table encounter at Lambert Park.

KICK OFF: Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers, 2pm at Lambert Park
It will be another important landmark in the history of the Western Sydney Wanderers when they take on rivals Sydney FC for the first time in the National Premier League on Saturday.
And with the Sky Blues narrowly leading their cross-town rivals in the push for promotion, the stage at Lambert Park could not be better set for the Sydney Derby lite to embrace the second tier of Australian league football for the first time.
With the PlayStation 4 NPL 2 NSW Men’s competition developing into a two horse race with over half of the season still to play, the Red & Black have the opportunity to wrestle the initiative off their neighbours in what will be the campaign’s standout fixture to date.
Robert Stanton’s Sydney FC have rampaged their way to pole position during the first half of the season, winning ten matches in a row following an opening day defeat to Mounties Wanderers all the way back in March.
A surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Marconi last Saturday, Sydney’s first defeat in ten matches, has trimmed the side’s NPL2 lead back to a single point ahead of the Wanderers’ visit this weekend.
Trevor Morgan’s Wanderers will relish the opportunity to compound the misery for Sydney and enter the derby fixture having dispatched Mounties Wanderers 4-1 last round, extending their unbeaten run to eight.
Former Sutherland Sharks product and this season’s NPL 2 top scorer Charles Lokolingoy has taken the league by storm at the forefront of the Sydney attack with 15 goals in his 12 appearances. The prolific Lokolingoy is flanked by another fellow Sutherland junior in Bai Antoniou who has been similarly efficient with 14 goals in 12 matches.
As the fixture is not open to Wanderers fans and Members, the best way to follow this match is through social media. Wanderers will be providing full coverage on Twitter.
